To obtain resistant hybrids against black spot disease in roses, Rosa rugosa cv. Pink was crossed with Rosa hybrida cultivars. Eleven offspring showed higher resistance to races of black spot than did the parents, and four of them had multiple resistances to three races of black spot. A hybrid of R. hybrida cv. Sun Obange×R. rugosa cv. Pink (10/99/03) with negative thornless stem and single flowers expressed high resistance to the specific race of black spot from R. hybrida cv. Rote Rose. The pollen grains of flowering offspring were poorly developed. From the results of ploidy analysis using a flow cytometer, most offspring obtained from this study showed intermediate level crossing. Exceptionally, bimodal peaks were detected on flow cytometry for the hybrid R. hybrida cv. Redia×R. rugosa cv. Pink (01/01/04) , which had multiple resistances to black spot. This hybrid was shown to be a ploidy-chimeric clone.
