This paper deals with recent advances of fundamental research on the mechanism of ring pattern for roll coating. When liquid films are produced by two-roll coaters, it is observed that the film is not uniform and undulates, which is called a “Ring Pattern”.In roll coating such as printing and coating machines, paste coating for corrugating machine, an unevenness in the liquid film appears at almost equal pitches on the roll surface in the axial direction of the cylinder. This unevenness sometimes results in a nonuniform coating when transferred onto paper. This is a major cause of the reduction in quality of the coating.Authors examined the behaviours and patterns of the ribs. Our result was summarized with recent advances of this field.By experiment and mathematical model analysis, it was found that the effect of negative static pressure near the meniscus is closely related to the occurence of ring pattern.
