Oil palm, Elaeis guinensis, is widely planted throughout the tropics and is one of the most important plants for edible oil production in the world. In Malaysia, about 10 million tons of palm oil is produced annually and this amounts to almost half of the world’s total production. Before harvesting the palm fruit bunches from which the oil is extracted, all the fronds below the fruits are cut down. This practice yields over 25 million tons of oil palm frond (OPF) dry matter every year. Although certain parts of this frond have traditionally been used as roofing materials, most of this by-product from the oil palm industry is discarded as waste materials. In Malaysia, the self sufficiency of livestock products is relatively low, due to the shortage of feed. Therefore, studies have been undertaken at the Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI) to investigate if OPF could be utilized as components of animal feed.
