espanolDesde los inicios de su labor lexicografica, los arcaismos han formado parte fundamental del Diccionario usual de la Real Academia Espanola (DRAE). Esta caracteristica, heredada del primer repertorio academico –el conocido como Diccionario de autoridades– constituye una de sus principales senas de identidad, asi como un clasico motivo de desencuentro entre los defensores y detractores del DRAE a lo largo de su dilatada existencia. Nuestro objetivo especifico en este trabajo sera contrastar los criterios utilizados por la Academia para la recogida y descripcion de los arcaismos lexicos con los empleados por Vicente Salva (1786-1849) en su Nuevo diccionario de la lengua castellana (1846), maximo representante de los autores de la corriente extraacademica de mediados del siglo xix EnglishFrom the very beginning of its lexicographical work, archaisms have been a fundamental part of the Royal Academy’s Diccionario de la lengua espanola. This feature, which was already present in the first academic repertoire known as Diccionario de autoridades is one of the main features that make up the distinguishing traits of the Dictionary, and it has always been a hot issue among followers and detractors of the DRAE throughout its long history. Our main concern in this paper is to compare two sets of criteria: those that were used by the Academy to collect and describe its Dictionary’s lexical archaisms, and those used by Vicente Salva (1786-1849) in his Nuevo diccionario de la lengua espanola, one of the most representative authors of the mid-nineteenth century non-academic trend.
