The following text offers a comparison of Czech and Polishsociological journals of the interwar era related to theproblems of the nation and the nation state. A combination ofquantitative and qualitative content analysis is used forcomparing formal characteristics (institutionalization,periodicity, types, number and size of articles), and thematicstructure. Czech sociology had a closer relationship tonation-state politics, which was shown at the level ofinstitutional (in)stability of the journals, at the level ofpersonal involvement of journals‘ leading figures in politicsas well as at the level of discourse, where different relevanceand content were attached to the subject of nation in eachcountry. Regarding this issue Czech sociology (represented injournals in the 1930s) was closer to public sociology while thePolish discourse to policy sociology.
