Numerical simulations of vortex generating jets (VGJs) on a ∞at plate at a Reynolds number based on plate length of 50,000, were performed using a time-accurate hybrid Navier-Stokes solver. Three ∞ow conditions were studied, and the results were compared to a companion experimental study. The numerical time-averaged ∞ow fleld of a steadyblowing, angled jet subjected to no pressure gradient, showed good agreement with experimental particle image velocimetry (PIV) data in terms of velocity components and vortical structure formations. Observed ∞ow features include a large vortex which dominates the downstream wake region. Instantaneous views of the steady jet show the formation of \kidney" vortex rings which were previously observed in various ∞ow visualization experiments. Pulsing of the angled jet was then analyzed with the zero pressure gradient freestream. A qualitative comparison between phase-lock averaged experimental and instantaneous numerical results was performed, with good agreement in terms of jet ∞uid convection downstream during the pulse period. Finally, an adverse pressure gradient was applied to the ∞at plate which induced a laminar separation zone aft of the VGJ hole, similar to that found on the suction side of a low pressure turbine blade. The pulsed, angled jet produced strong spanwise vortices in the separated free shear layer which appear to weaken the separation zone and facilitate the removal of the low-momentum separated ∞uid from the domain. The laminar separation zone does not return to its pre-pulse size before the subsequent pulse period begins. Qualitative comparisons of streamwise velocity showed good agreement between experimental and numerical data in terms of jet ∞uid interaction with this weakened separation zone.
