A procedure is described f o r the redesiqn of undamped s t r u c t u r a l systems to meet n a t u r a l f r e quency and/or mode shape ob jec t ives . The procedure can be appl ied to l a r q e or small modal chanqes and i s based on a s i n g l e f i n i t e element a n a l y s i s of the b a s e l i n e system. Per tu rba t ion of the base l ine system is used to develop a s e t of equat ions which c h a r a c t e r i z e the redesign process. Dependinq on the number of modal o b j e c t i v e s S and desiqn var i a b l e s o the problem is formulated as : ( 1 ) an undercons t ra ined problem i f S < o, ( 2 ) a properly cons t ra ined problem i f S = o o r ( 3 ) an overcons t r a i n e d problem i f S > a. A l l t h ree problems a r e solved usinq an incremental p red ic tor -cor rec tor technique within the f e a s i b i l i t y domain defined by t h e p r a c t i c a l c o n s t r a i n t s imposed on the desiqn v a r i a b l e s . The procedure is i l l u s t r a t e d by two examples : ( 1 ) a redesiqn of a c a n t i l e v e r beam t o achieve frequency and mode shape ob jec t ives and ( 2 ) a redesign of a 1254 deqree of freedom c a s t i n q f o r a frequency ob jec t ive .
