The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of live births in a city in the countryside of the state of Amazonas. A cross-sectional, quantitative and descriptive study was carried out in the municipality of Tefé from 2006 to 2012. The data on live births were obtained by the municipal health department from the epidemiological surveillance department, at the Live Birth Information System (SISNAC) database. The variables analyzed were: socio-demographic characteristics, gestational conditions, childbirth and characteristics of live births divided into three fronts (maternal, prenatal and newborn). The results evidenced a high percentage of teenage mothers, insufficient prenatal care, a low level of education and inadequate filling of Apgar. The results revealed that the epidemiological profile of the live births in Tefé is different from other regions in Brazil, and it is imperative that the municipality improves the basic care network and, as a result, improves the formulation of policies to support both maternal and children health.
