SUMMARYObjective: To characterize oclussal relationshipsin primary and early mixeddentition and arch dimensions in sagittal,transversal and vertical planes.Materials and methods: This descriptivestudy considered a convenience sample of107 children with an average age of 5.69years (59 girls and 48 boys) registered inten schools. Panoramic and cephalometricradiographs and study models were takenaccording to validated protocols. Panoramicradiographs showed the position andangulation of the first permanent molars.Results: 84% of patients in the study werecharacterized by having complete dentition,having a left and right molar relationshipsin flat terminal plane, an increased verticaloverbite, an anterior superior width in arange between 27 and 32 mm, a superiorposterior width between 32 and 39 mm, ananterior inferior width between 22 and 27mm and an inferior posterior width between39 and 46 mm. The inclination angle ofthe first superior molar is between 25 and36 degrees.Conclusion: Most patients had arch dimensionsand canine and molar relationshipswithin the normal parameters as reportedin the literature. Increased overbite andoverjet in vertical and horizontal planeswere found. In primary dentition, flat terminalplane and Class I canine relationshippredominated. Only in 16 patients wasapplicable permanent molar relationship,of which 9 had class II.Key words: Molar relationship, occlusalrelationship, arch dimensions, primarydentition, mixed dentition.
