SUMMARYObjective: To determine the characteristicsof hand-wrist and cervical vertebralossification and establish the correlationbetween these two techniques as indicatorsof somatic maturation in children between8 and 17 years old.Materials and Methods: A cross sectionaland correlational study was carried out in200 children between 8 and 17 years old,born in the same city. Children shouldshow no systemic diseases that affect theskeletal development or craniofacial syndromes.Lateral cephalometric radiographsand carpogram test were taken in the sameday. The frequency of the variables suchas gender, carpal and cervical vertebraematuration indexes was established. Acorrelation matrix (Pearson’s coefficient)for the quantitative variables (height andweight) and the variables that explain theindexes, and the ordinal scale variables andKendall’s Tau-b statistics were done. Regressionmodels were developed to predictthe skeletal maturation index (SMI).Results: According to the age and level ofskeletal maturation (skeletal maturationassessment - SMA), the ossification stagesbegin earlier in women than in men (womenSMI1: 8.4 +0.8 years and in men to 10.3+1.5 years). Depending on the correlationmodel, there is a direct relation betweenheight and shape of vertebrae with theSMI. The coefficient of determination (R2)indicated that 86% of SMI is explained bythe two analyzed variables.Conclusions: There was a statisticallysignificant correlation between height andshape of the vertebral body with stages ofskeletal maturation index (SMI).
