サラブレッド種の走行タイムを競走能力の指標として取り上げ,個体モデルのBLUP法によって育種価を推定した後,遺伝的趨勢の検討を行なった.1975年から1993年の日本中央競馬会(JRA)の競走成績から1600mの芝馬場(芝)とダート馬場(ダート)のデータを用いた.各馬の育種価は,レース,性,年齢,騎手および負担重量を母数効果として取り込んだ個体モデルのBLUP法により,MTDFREMLプログラム(1993)を用いて予測し,遺伝的趨勢は当該年に生まれた個体の予測育種価の平均値から推定した.また,父馬と母馬の内•外国産地別による4組の組み合わせ別に遺伝的趨勢を推定した.その結果,芝•ダートとも走行タイムは,負の(速くなる)遺伝的趨勢が認められ,生年に対する回帰係数はそれぞれ-0.0170秒,-0.0084秒であった.その差は高度に有意であった(P<0.001).また,父馬母馬の産地別の遺伝的趨勢は,芝において父外国産と母外国産の産駒の遺伝的趨勢が最もい傾向が認められた.このことから近年優秀な種雄馬や繁殖母馬が輸入され,日本のサラブレッド種の改良に寄与していることが示唆される.
