Eurycoma longifolia Jac, a medicinal herb, is used to treat malaria, cancer, diabetes and sexual dysfunction in human. In 2012, we reported the method of hairy-root culture of Eurycoma longifolia aiming to create a stable source of raw materials for the pharmaceutical need. In this study, we further examined the biological activities of the methanolic extracts from hairyand naturalroots of Eurycoma longifolia. The results showed that the methanolic extracts from hairyand natural-roots inhibited the production of IL-6 in THP-1 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with IC50 of 3.6 and 6.6 (μg/ml), respectively. Two methanolic extracts from hairyand natural-roots had moderate cytotoxic activity against three human cancer cell lines, HepG2, LU-1, and MCF-7 with IC50 of 77.4, 61.1, 88.2 (μg/ml) and 63.8, 46.2, 54.8 (μg/ml), respectively. However, both investigated extracts were incapable of inhibiting lipid peroxidation (IC50 > 100).
