Kumamoto city government's aim is to decrease the number of rnissing teeth with aging. We then started "the Dental Examination fer 20 Years Old" project since 1998. We have.performed dental examinations on the oral condition and questionnaire about the knowledge of oral care for 153 young people aged between 18 and 29 years during university festivals in 2001. We found that the extensive decay of teeth and collapse of the gums had not been seen, although their oral hygiene were not so geod. However, the frequency of use of inter-dental brush and dental floss was low, and the negative effect for periodontal disease by smoking was not recognized so well. These results suggest that effective education and instruction for dental health is required among young people in their 20's.
