The purpose of guaranteeing the health of the population is to contribute to efficient and quality care in the services, with the development of promotion, education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment activities for the different diseases. Self-medication is a practice that most of the population frequently realized for social, economic or cultural reasons; it become a strategy that people choose to take to meet their own health needs. Objective. To determine the prevalence of self-medication in people who attend the dental clinic of the catholic university of cuenca. Methods: it was a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study. The survey technique was used with application of the questionnaire as an instrument. The sample was made up of 383 patients attending the dental clinic of the catholic university of cuenca. Results: The results were obtained in a sample of 383 people who attended the dental clinic with a prevalence of 73% of people who self-medicated and 27% of people who did not self-medicate. In terms of gender, it was determined that women self-medicated more than men did. Conclusions: The level of self-medication of patients attending the dental clinic was high, being more predominant in the female sex; NSAIDs were the most consumed medicines, the same ones that more frequently obtained in the pharmacy.
