This paper proposes and applies a systematic method to establish a global model involving both rail and road traffic in the level crossing (LC) area. The model building approach proposes a progressive integration of elementary models, each of which describes the behavior of a part of the entire LC environment. The focus is on a particular phenomenon that may cause collisions at LCs, corresponding to the accumulation of vehicle waiting queues on the LC exit zone. Petri Nets (PN) are used to enable the model. To obtain a realistic behavioral model, quantitative aspects are integrated in the form of functions associated to the transitions of the PN model (Stochastic PN).
