In the frarncwork of the EU-life Projcct "Evaluation and first assessment of old deposits", financed by the Europcan Union, the IMAGE Department of the University of Padova carried out a survey for thc evaluation of the current situation o r old landfills in Southcrn Europe Countries and in particular in Italy, and the application of a novel risk assessment model proposed by thc EVAPASSOLD partners, as a priority ranking system for remediation intcrvcntion. The most significant parameters for the characterization of old landfills wcre considered, such as: volume and height of landfills, years after landfill closurc, wastc characteristics, geological situation, prcscncc and characteristics of groundwatcr and the liquid-solid ratio (LIS), which indica~cs the amount of rainfall through the landfill body related to thc waste mass. The preliminary risk assessment modcl was applicd to some landfills in northern Italy.
