The possibility of using Real-Time Holographic Interferometry to measure the deformation of a Flat-Oval Type Bourdon Tube (F. O. T. B. T.) whose diameter is 80 mm, has been investigated analytically and experimentally.A diaphragm is placed at the center of the focal plane of an aperture lens to pass only the light rays that are approximately parallel to its optical axis. The viewing direction in the measurement of the F. O. T. B. T. is so selected that the shearing component of the displacement of each point on the outer surface of the F. O. T. B. T., is small enough to allow the measurement of the displacement up to 30 μm. The results obtained from this measurement agree with those from another instrument within the experimental error. The experimental results show that the displacement of each point on the center line of the outer surface of the F. O. T. B. T. in the original radial direction is proportional to the winding angle if it is larger than 60° measured from the fixed end. Finally the expansion of the flat face is measured.
