The metallurgical observations at the region near the sliding surface of the test pieces described in the previous paper showed that the microstructural change in the surface layer is like the one observed in the smeared surface layer of the bearing races. By considering this fact and severe temperature rise at sliding contact reported in the previous paper, it was concluded that a cause of the smearing crack is the transformation stress of metals accompanied with the stresses due to mechanical and thermal conditions. While, some model experiments were carried out to gain practical knowledge for preventing the smearing crack. The influences of sliding conditions such as hardness and materials of test pieces, surface treatment and lubricants were examined experimentally with respect to characteristics of cracking.
