A solution culture experiment was carried out to study the growth response of the rice plant to the water temperature during daytime and night in mid-summer season. The results of the experiment are as follows:—(1) When the temperature was higher (30°C) than the optimum (31°C), either during daytime or at night, both the top and the root growth was retarded. And such a retarded growth due to high water temperature (37°C) during day time appeared to be compensated by lowering the water temperature at night bellow the optimum (31°C).(2) When the water temperature was higher than the optimum, root-rot was increased and the decrease both in the water absorption and in the transpiration was observed.(3) From these results, growth response of the plant to the water temperature treatment seems to have an intimate relationship with both the increase of the root-rot and the decrease of the water aborption or of the transpiration caused by supra-optimum water temperature.
