It is expected that molecular electronics, i.e.,the use of molecules as critical functional elements inelectronic devices, will lead in the near future to anindustrial exploitable novel technology, which will opennew routes to high value-added electronic products.However, despite the enormous advances in this fieldseveral scientific and technological challenges shouldbe surmounted before molecular electronics can beimplemented in the market. Among these challenges arethe fabrication of reliable, robust and uniform contactsbetween molecules and electrodes, the deposition ofthe second (top) contact electrode, and development ofassembly strategies for precise placement of molecularmaterials within device structures. This review coversadvances in nanofabrication techniques used for theassembly of monomolecular films onto conducting orsemiconducting substrates as well as recent methodsdeveloped for the deposition of the top contact electrodehighlighting the advantages and limitations of the severalapproaches used in the literature. This contribution alsoaims to define areas of outstanding challenges in thenanofabrication of monomolecular layers sandwichedbetween two electrodes and opportunities for futureresearch and applications
