The Hosokura Smelter is now widely recognized as one of the greatest lead and zinc smelters in Japan, which has the capacity of 1,300tons of electrolytic and Parkes lead, 1,000 tons of electrolytic zinc, and 1,800 tons of sulfuric acid per month. In this paper, it is proposed to follow the development and expansion of the smelter since the close of World War II. Chronological tables of main engineering works are shown with detailed explanatory notes, in which the following items are included as the prominent parts : (1) A remarkable increase in the productive capacity of the lead plant., which wasaccomplished by the successive devices. (2) An establishment of the sulfuric acid plant, with a view: to treat the waste gas of zinc concentrate roasting plant. (3) The successive improvements of the zinc plant, which have made possible the production of extra pure electrolytic zinc (up to 99.997% of Zn), etc.
