We investigated the effect of reversed stress on the impact value and transition temperature of annealed, pre-strained or strain-aged low carbon and high tension steel plates with V-notch.The results obtained are summarized as follows:(1) The V-notch Charpy impact values of both steel plates may be decreased by the 4% prestrain, and they may be decreased still more by the strain-aging at 250°C. But in either case, the effect of reversed stress on the impact value is similar. It is found at about 70% stress of fatigue limit (in nominal stress). Of course, above the fatigue limit, it is found clearly.(2) The transition temperature rises by pre-tension and strain-aging, and still more by the increase of reversed stress and the number of cycles. In this case, the rate of its rise is larger in pre-strained steel than in annealed or strain-aged steel, and smaller in low carbon steel than in high tension steel. But, as the transition temperature in high tension steel plate is very low, it does not rise above the transition temperature in low carbon steel plate.(3) The curve of rise in the transition temperature with the increase of thenumber of cycles has a similar tendency to the curve of increase of crack depth at the bottom of V-notch. Therefore, it is considered that the rise in the transition temperature of annealed, pre-strained and strain-aged steel plates is caused chiefly by the crack.Even if the reversed load conditions are not similar, the transition temperatures come almost to the same value when the material and crack depth are the same.
