Harzburgitic rocks in Sangun zone and adjacent areas can be divided into two types. One is free from clinopyroxene and contains extremely Ca-depleted (“non-calciferous”) orthopyroxene and tremolite. The other is ordinary harzburgite, which contains ordinarily calciferous orthopyroxene and small amounts of clinopyroxene. The former is always accompanied with younger granitic masses, and is predominantly distributed in the central part of the Chugoku district and in northern Kyushu. It can be interpreted to have been produced by thermal metamorphism from strongly serpentinized clinopyroxene-bearing peridotites. In Joetsu region, central Japan, ultramafic complexes are also invaded by large amounts of granitic rocks. “Non-calciferous” orthopyroxene is also found, and petrogenesis of ultramafic complexes in the central part of the Chugoku district (Arai, 1973a, b) may be directly applied to those in Joetsu region. Original rocks of pre-recrystallization stage may be wehrlitic peridotites with thin clinopyroxenite layers.
