Since 1998, MCI has carried out qualitative research to investigate the position of Afghan women in Helmand province of Afghanistan and in the refugee villages of Pakistan. The aim of this research is to open discursive spaces for the narratives of Afghan women. There is a need for local, female, interpretations of the impacts of the current situation under the Taliban, on women's lives. Issues of women's mobility, work and activities are addressed, as are repatriation, women's role in agricultural production and access to health care and education. A brief discussion on the Taliban, Pushtoon cultural practices, seclusion and discourses of the veil is included to broaden focus. Women's position under the restrictions of the Taliban is not uniform. Women have always had to negotiate their position within many layers of power; within the family, the culture and politics. For rural and conservative urban women, the Taliban have been little more than.one more layer of influence. Within these layers of influence and power, women are able to operate, resist and comment on their lives in a number of ways. The greatest difference in many rural women's lives is security in their area, and an emerging awareness of the wider world and of their rights.
