The economy of the twelve provinces of West China has been growing rapidly since the great development of Western China.In particular,the per-capita GDP of Inner Mongolia has increased from a low of 5,872 Yuan,number 16 in the country and greatly below the 8,592 Yuan national average for the year 2000,to 16,331 Yuan,the tenth highest in the country and above the 16,203 Yuan national average for the year 2005.Also,in 2005,the growth rate of Inner Mongolia’s GDP increased to 23.8%, rising 13.6% above the national average.This growth rate was number one in the country for three consecutive years.This rapid growth is due to fixed asset investment growth that has increased to 48.6% (2005),making it number one in the country.In addition,it is the country’s second highest total retail sales of consumer goods.Beyond these direct factors,the industrial structure specific to Inner Mongolia is a significant factor in economic development.In this study,I examined the reasons for this rapid economic growth by identifying industrial features unique to Inner Mongolia and issues related to unemployment faced by the local economies.
