Increasingly, academic studies have used the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability reporting as a data source. Due to this demand, it is important to know how the publications of reports have been developed over the years. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the characteristics of the sustainability reports published in the Global Reporting Initiative database from 2011 to 2017, in order to verify how these publications behave recently. Results present an overview of the publications of the GRI considering its historical evolution of publication in terms of region, country, sector of activities of the organizations and level of application of the guidelines. It also presents suggestions for future research and reflections of practical application based on the dissemination of sustainability reports.
