The research intends to present the shale gas as an energy resource tied to the meanings of energy efficiency and independence, but of potential environmental impacts. Because of its particularities in the geopolitical context, there is talk of China's investments to create an energy culture based on unconventional gas - also as a way to mitigate the international obstacle related to climatic hazards. Nevertheless, from the hypothetical-deductive method, the Chinese sustainable development based on shale gas was problematized, since the social and environmental damages resulting from the activity put at risk the realization of human rights. The present paper proposes, therefore, to question: the option for the exploration and use of shale gas in China can be interpreted as an unsustainable path to sustainability?
