The synthesis of new derivatives of pcoumaric acid was carried out through serial reactions, i.e. alkylating, base hydrolysis, catalytic hydrogenation, and Fisher esterification. All reactions except catalytic hydrogenation were conducted by utilizing microwave irradiation from a household microwave oven. The antiplatelet tests using clotting time showed that pcoumaric acid and its derivatives have antiplatelet activity which is related to the lipophilic nature of the compounds and its affinity with the selected target molecule, i.e. COX-1 enzyme (PDB ID 1CQE).
