Some instruments are necessary in order to reach the goals in education programs. Implementing education, enabling timely and permanent learning can only be possible through the use of these instruments. The most frequently used instruments in teaching environments are textbooks; it is quite easy to reach and use them. Development in technology has bombarded people all around the world in terms of visuals. With the effect of visual media, which is more popular than the other media instruments, learning through eyes rather than reading has become more popular and visual phenomenon have started to become more important. The texts that are included in these course books should be in a quality that enables students to gain reading skills as it is the most basic part of a native language. As a result, several criteria should be taken into consideration while choosing these texts for the course books. One of these criteria is readability. In this study it is aimed to evaluate the readability of 8th grade Republic of Turkey Revolution History and Kemalism course book and to determine whether it is suitable for the target age-level and it in terms of visual design principals. A total of 80 teacher candidates studying at Artvin Çoruh University, Faculty of Education, analyzed 8th grade Republic of Turkey Revolution History and Ataturkism textbook according to the visual design principals scale; the scale was developed by Alpan and was made of five sub dimensions. Three texts were selected from different parts of the course book and the readability formula developed by Ateşman (1997) for Turkish language was used. Arithmetic mean of the obtained findings was calculated and it was determined that the textbook was sufficient in terms of typographic features, text organizers, design of Kalem Eğitim ve İnsan Bilimleri Dergisi 2020, 10(1), 143-165 145 visual elements, page design, cover design and external structure features for production sub-dimensions. According to the results, readability level of one of the three selected texts is found to be really difficult and readability levels of the other two texts are found out as difficult. This shows that the texts included in the course book are difficult fort he target population.
