Synopsis : Friction force between mold and slab was measured by load cell in order to optimize mold powder and oscillation conditions for No. 3 continuous caster at Chiba Works. Furthermore, a method for prediction and prevention of the breakout was also studied to minimize reduction of productivity when a countermeasure was taken for avoiding the breakout. Results obtained are as follows : 1) Adoption of mold powder with low viscosity and reduction of negative stripping ratio made it possible to cast low carbon aluminum killed steel stably at 2.0 m/min by decreasing friction force less than 200 gf/cm2. 2) Effect of the viscosity of mold powder and negative stripping ratio on the friction force can be reasonably explained by considering viscous friction. 3) The breakout can be successfully predicted by thermocouples set in parallel to meniscus in mold copper plate. 4) When the breakout sensor alarms, the casting speed is instantly lowered down to the predetermined allowable level to avoid the breakout.
