Synopsis Recent tendency to en/argillg various structures made of steel Illates, sl/ch as shills and bridges brings about the lI eed Jar producillg large ingots which weigh more than 30 t. Such large ingots often exhib·;t, along the central vertical axis, a loose stmcture which deteriorates not only the homogeneity oj solidificatioll structllre, but also mechanical Il roperties q! end-/nodncts , esllecially through-thickness reduction of area oj plates in Z -temile test . Research works all the loose structure and its effects on mechanical prollerties have seldom been reported bifore. The presellt report has proposed a new method using ultrasonic test to measure quantitatively the looseness in the structure oj ingots. "Vith this method, the iffects oj ingot weight and shape on the Jormation oj the loose structure have been made clear. Furthermore , the change oj the looseness by roiling has been investigated. T he reductioll oj area in Ztensile test , which is oj prime importance all heavy plates, has been Tevealed to be substantially dependent all the looseness ill the plates originating.!i·om that oj ingots.
