The brittle fracture pro/Jagation-arrest characteristics of low CMn steel plates alloyed with 0 to 5°0 _ i has bem investigated by a newly developed small specimen testillg method , the Tapered D ouble Cantilever B eam test , which gives a good correlation to the large specimen D ouble Tension test. The results obtained are as follows ,' (1) The brittle fracture propagation-arrest characteristics is linearly improved with the increase of N i contm t both for normalized and for quench-and-tempered steel plates . B ainitic structures which give deleterious effec t on the Charpy impact properties do not affect the brittle fracture propagation-arrest characteristics. (2) Refin~ment of microstructures by heat treatment improves the Charpy imsact properties greatly , but the brittle fracture pro/Jagationarrest characteristics only slightly . (3) As a whole, the brittle fracture propagation-arrest characteristics show a behavior different from the Charpy impact properties . The former is sensitive to the change of chemical compositions (N i content ) and insensitive to the change of microstructures (baillitic or refined structures) .
