A small amount oj sodium chloride vapor was added 10 the reducing gas mixture oj COC02N2 or H .N 2 and the reduction rates oj various i ron ores were measured by a microbalance at 700 and 900 C. By using Ihe ores which were dijlped in an aqueous solution oj sodium chloride and dried, the reduction rate was also measured. The significant accelerating eifect oj sodium chloride in vapor and condensed states was observed in the reduction step Jrom wustite to iron. This eifect was universally observed Jar various commercial ores , but it was most remarkable Jar the reduction oj wustite single crystal. The growth oj iron grains on the wustite single cr) 'stal was observed w ilh or without the addition oj chloride vapor. Xo significant diiference was observed in the mode oj the growth. Electron-scanning-microscopic observation revealed that mal?)' large open pores are conlained in Ihe sponge iron reduced Jrom the pellet dipped ill a chloride solution. Separately, the eifect oj sodium chloride vapor on the sintering rate oj iron w ire was investigated at 900 C. The sintering rale was increased by Ihe addilion oj chloride va/lor to Ihe sintering atmosphere oj CO, CO 2 and :-\ . al Jollows.
