The indirect pulp extirpation by means of arsenious acid is being replaced with the direct pulp extirpation with the use of a local anesthetic on the grounds that the former has some ill effects by reason of its arsenious acid. However, even the latter is far from ideal with not a few accompanying drawbacks. One of these drawbacks is the frament bleeding caused by the breakage of pulp vessels to be involved in the extirpation process. The application of warm physiological salt solution onto the spot is the chief means of hemostasia adopted hitherto but it is rather a negative method from the pharmacological point of view. It stands to reason that some strong means of hemostasia should be employed for the purpose. Although the physiological salt solution is somewhat warmed, it is quite doubtful how long that temperature will keep up before it fully works in the pulp cavity. The authors have attempted a comparative study between the cases for which a strong hemostatic, adrenochromazone (an adrenochrom preparation),1) 2) was administered and those of non-administration. Prior to the pulp extirpation, the same drug was given and its effects have been contrasted against the bleeding of non-hemostatic case. At the same time, they have undertaken a test as to the toxicity of adrenochromazone itself.
