一般的なワムシ培養法の一つである植え継ぎ培養において, 増殖ステージに伴う餌料価値の質的変化について検討した。培養日数2, 4, 6および8日目のワムシを同一条件で栄養強化したところ, 8日目のワムシは栄養強化中の死亡個体率が有意に高くなり, 生理活性の指標である総卵率が低くなった。また, そのような8日目ワムシを摂餌したマダイ仔魚の成長は他の実験区より有意に劣った。これらのことから, 植え継ぎ培養において増殖停滞期または, その直前に収獲されたワムシを栄養強化しても, 餌料としての質は劣ることが明らかになった。
