The occurrence period, location, and body size of ovigerous females of Macrobrachium nipponense, M. formosense and M. japonicum were investigated in the Shimanto and Niyodo Rivers, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. In both rivers, the main incubation period of the three species was longer in the Shimanto River than in the Niyodo River. On the other hand, ovigerous females of M. japonicum occurred more widely upstream in the Shimanto River than in the Niyodo River. In terms of body size, there were no signiˆcant diŠerences between M. nipponense and M. japonicum occurring in both rivers. In contrast, compared with the Niyodo River, the body size of M. formosense was smaller in the Shimanto River. The above diŠerences among rivers are likely due to factors such as gradient, water temperature and ˆshing.
