We determined stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions (d13C and d15N) and 12 element compositions (Mg, P, Ca, V, Mn, Fe, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Ba) of raw wakame Undaria pinnatiˆda, boiled and salted wakame, and cut and dried wakame (boiled and salted wakame is washed, cut and dried) from various cultivation areas in Japan (Sanriku and Naruto areas), China and the Republic of Korea to discriminate their geographical origins. The combination of d13C and d15N values and common logarithms of 10 elemental concentrations to that of Sr were selected as the most appropriate model. 90.5 of Sanriku wakame products (n=169), 100 of Naruto wakame products (271), 100 of Chinese wakame products (252) and 83.8 of the Republic of Korea wakame products (74) were correctly classiˆed into the production site. Thus, d13C and d15N and common logarithms of 10 elemental concentrations to that of Sr will be potentially useful for discriminating the geographical origin of wakame, boiled and salted wakame, and dried wakame between Sanriku, Naruto, China and the Republic of Korea.
