Six spiny lobsters, Panulirus japonicas, P. longipes femoristriga, P, homarus homarus, P. paricillaaus, P, ornaws, andP. uersicolor, are found and fished commercially along the coasts of Japan. Of these six species, Japanese spiny lobster is the most widely distributed and abundant. So, Japanese lobster is one of the most important commercial rocky shore resources caught by coastal fisheries using mainly gill net or tangle net The average of the total annual catches of spiny lobsters in Japan from 1912 to 1976 and the coefficient of variation are 1314 t and 13.9%, respectively, a fairly stable figure compared with other fishery products. The coefficient of variation per region is higher, but regional differences offset each other to maintain the rather low national coefficient.1.2) In addition, in the areas influenced by the Kuroshio Current, a relationship between the circulation pattern and the recruitment of post-larvae has been documented.3) Size frequency distribution, age composition, and their seasonal change in southern Izu peninsula indicated that distribution pattern of age group was stable and specific to geographical characteristics. Same phenomenons were found in many coasts. While little is known on transportation mechanism of larvae and larval ecology, these fads suggest the presence of relatively stable recruitment procedure of spiny lobsters in Japan. We should make a brief review of the life cycle and recruitment procedure of Japanese spiny lobster, especially concerning those in the southern Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, central Pacific coast of Japan.

Recruitment of the Japanese spiny lobster, <i>Panulirus japonicus</i>, in the coastal waters of Japan
