In continuously growing teeth, cells and tissues are continuously produced at the base of the tooth throughout life. When the periodontium changes with continuous eruption of the teeth, the role of the vascular system may be important. Therefore, we evaluated the vascular network in the filling cementum and periodontal membrane, especially the association between the vascular system and the structure of the tooth base, where hard tissue forms. Permanent molars of adult rabbits were used. In addition to specimens for light microscopy, vascular casts and fractured specimens were prepared and observed by scanning electron microscopy.1. The area surrounding the tooth base consisted of 3 layers of a vascular network. In the outermost layer, blood vessels with a diameter of 70-80μm, forming a network, surrounded the base. In the intermediate layer, blood vessels with a diameter of about 30μm ascended straight in parallel. In the inner layer, blood vessels with a diameter of 7-10μm in contact with the tooth surface formed a capillary network.2. In the filling cementum at the tooth base, blood vessels ascending straight in the buccal depressed area gave branches in the lingual direction in a stair-like pattern. These branches anastomosed, forming a network. At the end of the tooth base, these blood vessels formed hairpin-like capillary loops showing blind ends, suggesting angiogenesis.
