The huoride-lanthanum treatment (F-La treatment), that is, the acidulated phosphate-fluoride solution (APF) treatment for the human enamel followed by a lanthanum solution, has been successfully extended to human dentin for the reduction of secondary dental caries. The solubility of the F-La treated dentin decreased by about one half lower than the APF treatment when the acid solubility test was applied for one hour. The pretreatment of dentin with phosporic acid solution which is required for ename lcould be omitted. The surface of the F-La treated dentin was coated with spherical compounds, which when analyzed were found to be a mixture of calcium fluoride, amorphous lanthanum fluoride and amorphous lanthanum phosphate. These compounds were not fully removed from the surface after the acid solubility test of one hour duration. According to the result's of both electron probe X-ray microanalysis and the acid etch procedure, lanthanum as well as fluorine were found about 12ƒÊm in depth from the surface of dentin. About 7 pm of the treated layer was preserved after exposure to the acidic solution for one hour, this value is ten times greater than in the case of APF treated surfaces. Based on these results, it is concluded that since the F-La treatment of human dentin which is able to decrease dentin solubility in acidic solutions, it might be applied to clinical trials to evaluate it's inhibition of primary and secondary caries.
