Glucan film formed on glass by cell-free glucosyltransferases (GTF) prepared from Strepto coccus mutans OMZ 176 was not removed by sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) . However, de novo formation of a glucan film on glass was inhibited by the presence of SLS . High concentrations of SLS in glucan-synthesizing mixtures inhibited production of glucans , whereas low concentrations of SLS increased the production of glucans. Glucans produced in the presence of SLS had a lower ratio of ƒ¿ -1,3-linked glucose residues to ƒ¿-1 ,6-linked glucose residues as compared with glucans produced in the absence of SLS. The former glucans possessed lower intrinsic viscosity than the latter glucans . Treatment of the GTF complex with SLS seemed to result in its resolution .
