歯周治療におけるスケーリングおよびルートプレーニングを効率よく行うためのシャープニングに関する研究の一環として, 著者らは市販の各種砥石の耐摩耗性と研削能率について検討した。ISF, ISM, AS, GCS, CS, WAS320, WAS1000の7種砥石および被研削試料としてステンレススチールを選択し, 両者を著者らが考案した研削用試験機 (シャープニングマシン) に装着して往復運動によるシャープニングを行った。砥石の表面粗さおよび粗さ曲線を耐摩耗性, 被研削試料の摩耗重量を研削能率とし, さらに研削試料の表面粗さを測定し, 以下の結論を得た。1. 砥石の耐摩耗性はISF, ISMがすぐれていた。2. 砥石の研削効率はISF, ISM, CSがすぐれていた。3. 被研削試料の表面粗さはWAS1000, ASを使用した場合は滑沢であり, CSを用いた場合は粗造であった。4. 砥石の耐摩耗性および被研削試料の表面粗さは砥石自身の表面粗さによる影響が大であった。
