The effect of various additives such as different nickel carboxylate, accelerator MBTS, sulfur and ZnO on the peel strength has been studied in the direct adhesion of surface-treated magnesium alloys to styrene butadiene rubber-natural rubber (SBR-NR) blends. Good adhesion was obtained by using nickel branched-alkyl carboxylates such as nickel 2-ethylhexanoate and nickel isostearate, whereas no effect for this adhesion was observed when nickel straight-chain carboxylates such as nickel n-octanoate and nickel n-stearate were added. The analysis of adhesion interface by an electroprobe microanalyzer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope showed that nickel, sulfur and zinc in rubber compounds transferred onto the surface of Mg alloys and the amounts of these elements raised with the increase of nickel 2-ethylhexanoate concentration. This suggestes that interface layers which contained ZnS and active nickel sulfides are formed at the adhesion interface during vulcanization, and the interface layers become thicker by increasing the nickel 2-ethylhexanoate concentration.Moreover, it is found that the highest peel strength were obtained when 0.5phr for MBTS, 2phr for sulfur and 5 phr for ZnO were added in rubber compounds respectively, but peel strength under the excessive sulfur or MBTS addition decreased due to the drop in tearing strength of vulcanized rubber.
