In the genus Gluconobacter Asai 1935, ten species were once described: Gluconobacter oxydans (Henneberg 1897) De Ley 1961, Gluconobacter cerinus Yamada and Akita 1984, Gluconobacter frateurii Mason and Claus 1989, Gluconobacter asaii Mason and Claus 1989, Gluconobacter albidus (ex Kondo and Ameyama 1958) Yukphan et al. 2005, Gluconobacter thailandicus Tanasupawat et al. 2005, Gluconobacter kondonii Malimas et al. 2008, Gluconobacter roseus (ex Asai 1935) Malimas et al. 2008, Gluconobacter japonicus Malimas et al. 2009, and Gluconobacter sphaericus (Ameyama 1975) Malimas et al. 2008 (Gosselé et al., 1983; Malimas et al., 2007, 2008a, b, c, d, e; 2009; Mason and Claus, 1989; Skerman et al., 1980; Tanasupawat et al., 2004, 2005; Yamada and Akita, 1984a, b; Yukphan et al., 2004d, 2005). Of the ten species, G. asaii was a junior subjective synonym of G. cerinus (Katsura et al., 2002; Tanaka et al., 1999; Yamada et al., 1999). The number of species therefore amounted to nine in total. This paper is concerned with Gluconobacter kanchanaburiensis sp. nov., the tenth species of the genus Gluconobacter, of which two isolates were obtained from spoiled fruits of Artocarpus heterophyllus (jackfruit) collected at Thong Pha Phum, Kanchanaburi, Thailand on November 4, 2003.
