The genus Micromonospora Ørskov (1923) is the type genus of the family Micromonosporaceae. This family now contains several genera, including the genera Micromonospora, Actinoplanes, Dactylosporangi­ um, and Pilimelia (Goodfellow et al., 1990). The genus Micromonospora was well classified on the basis of chemotaxonomic characteristics, gyrB and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses including DNA-DNA relatedness (Kasai et al., 2000; Kawamoto, 1989; Koch et al., 1996; Kroppenstedt, 1985). Micromonospora strains are distributed widely in different environments such as soils, water, sandstone, and root nodules (Ara and Kudo, 2007; Hirsch et al., 2004; Kawamoto, 1989; Luedemann and Brodsky, 1964; Trujillo et al., 2005, 2006). Recently, the novel species of Micromonospora aurantinigra, M. eburnea, M. endolithica, M. mirobri­ gensis, M. siamensis, M. citrea, M. echinaurantiaca, M. echinofusca, M. fulviviridis, M. inyonensis, M. peuce­ tia, M. sagamiensis, M. viridifaciens, M. chokoriensis, M. coxensis, M. lupini, and M. saelicesensis were reported (Ara and Kudo, 2007; Hirsch et al., 2004; Kroppenstedt et al., 2005; Thawai et al., 2004, 2005a, b; Trujillo et al., 2005, 2006, 2007). During a search of novel actinomycetes from marine soils in southern Thailand, we isolated two strains, MA-2T and MA-1, showing morphological characteristics of the genus Micromonospora. In this paper we report the taxonomic characterization and classification of these isolates and propose a new species Micromonospora krabien­ sis sp. nov. for the strains. Strains MA-2T and MA-1 were isolated from marine soil collected in Krabi Province, Thailand by using starch-casein nitrate agar (Jongrungruangchok et al., 2008) after incubation at 30°C for 21 days. They were purified and maintained on yeast extract-malt extract agar (International Streptomyces Project medium no. 2, ISP medium 2). The isolates were grown on ISP medium 2 and oat meal agar (ISP medium 3) for 2 weeks at 30°C and were observed by light microscopy (model CHS, Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) and scanning electron microscopy (model JSM-5410 LV; JEOL, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). Samples for scanning electron microscopy were prepared as described previously (Itoh et al., 1989). Cultural characteristics were determined by using 14-day cultures grown at 30°C on ISP media, as described by Shirling and Gottlieb (1966). The Color Harmony Manual (Jacobson et al., 1958) was used for determining the color of colonies. The decomposition of various compounds was examined by using the basal media recommended by using Gordon et al. (1974).
