The present paper treats the problem of the pretwisted, narrow cross section beam on the basis of an approximate system of differential equations which is obtained by variational methods from the theory of shallow thin shells.Application of the equations of the paper to the problem of torsional vibrations shows that a relatively small amount of pretwist may have a considerable influence on the torsional frequencies of the beam.
