compositions, PCNP-3 is eutectic, while PCNP-1 and -2 are off-eutectics that slightly deviate from PCNP-3. Alloy ingots were made by arc melting mixtures of pure Pd, Ni and Cu metals, and pre-alloyed Pd-P ingots in an argon atmosphere. From these master ingots, cylindrical samples of 3 mm in di- ameter were prepared by injection casting of the molten al- loys into a copper mold with a cylindrical cavity. A de- tailed description of the preparation has been reported else- where. 1) Such processed cast alloys possessed a completely glassy phase. The identification was made by X-ray diffrac- tion (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), opti- cal microscopy (OM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For annealing treatment and microstructural analy- ses, the cylindrical cast alloys were sectioned into short chips. These short chips were encapsulated in quartz tubes under a vacuum atmosphere of approximately 2×10 −4 Pa, and subse- quently annealed them at 770 K (just below the eutectic tem- perature, Te) for different time intervals, and then quenched them in water. The microstructures of annealed samples were examined by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and TEM. Phase compositions were determined by energy dis- persive spectroscopy (EDS) equipped with an electron micro- probe.
