For many years the topic of contribution and indemnity between joint-tortfeasors has attracted the attention of students of the law, and the discussion is still going on.' During the past decade, however, the subject has attained special significance in connection with injuries to harbor workers; the expansion of responsibility of shipowners 2 has produced a considerable body of decisions dealing with their attempts to shift the burden of damages to the worker's employer. Consequently, a re-examination of the doctrines of contribution and indemnity is in order to ascertain the manner in which they fit into the pattern of employer's liability which has developed from the enactment of the Longshoremen's and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act.3
