LongitudiUal data from the 1970 Census and the National Longitudinal Surveys are used in the empirical analysis. Neither, sample provides evidence of a systematic racial differential /n the effect:of interfirm mobility on occupational advancement. The evidence with respect to intrafirm advancement is less unequivocal. Given the racial differential in initial occupational levels, however, only small black -white differences in.advancement appear, within internal labor markets.
