A look back through history reveals that a man has always been exposed to diseases, injuries and accidents. He has used different ways and methods of treatment, and at the same time investigated the causation of disease outbreaks. Centuries ago, infectious diseases were a great unknown to mankind, primarily due to the inability of early detection of pathogens, but also the attribution of supernatural origin of many diseases of epidemic proportions. Although described through the history of medicine as a segment of other infectious diseases, most commonly fever or sepsis, with present headache as a symptom, meningitis has long remained unrecognized as a distinct clinical entity. Epidemic forms of meningitis occurrence, history recorded in the beginning of 19th century and the most important discoveries related to inflammation of the central nervous system, meningitis and encephalitis, were published by the end of the 19th century.
